Xylas' Quest 02:28
Xylas Quest The veil, a mystic barrier that lives in two worlds. Its purpose, to hide the world of fae’s from the world of Mortals. Within this veil, there is a colony named Dunhanna Breathe. A small community of fae's who live their lives in peace. Amongst them however was a curious young fae named Xyla, She would venture to the nearest edge of Dunhanna and speak with the otters in the singing river. They told her of the mortals, giants who waste everything and appreciate nothing. Xyla became curious if the stories were true after all, otters have been known to exaggerate. Xyla could not get the stories out of her had and decided to see if they were real. She asked Mifnaunin the head of the colony if she could go. Mifnaunin forbade it, She told Xyla that that world is not for us. The veil is what keeps us safe. Later that night Xyla who respected Mifnaunin very much but had to know left the colony and passed through the veil in search of Mortals to see if Human tales were real.

Do I? They won’t let me go All I hear is no But I must know if it is true the tales I have read thru and thru Beyond our land just out of reach A myth or reality I must breach to see if they are real to believe in human tales

Veles 02:52
Veles Deep in the dark forest there treaded a mischievous snake. Veles, had but one objective in mind, to become like the humans. Long ago Humans were caretakers of the forest and they kept Veles kind at bay. Now mortals are greedy and ignorant. Veles knew if he could speak as they do he could easily manipulate and control the humans. There was but one way and Veles knew he would never have the opportunity. After all, he needed a fae and they hid behind the veil. That is when to his astonishment Veles saw a fae flitting in the wood. Veles was transfixed and could not believe it. If he could capture it and eat the fae he could gain the power of human speech. Veles slithered across the muddy swamp and followed the fae never letting her out of his sight. She traveled for hours then stopped looking left and right. Veles knew she must be lost. This was his chance. He sunk low to the ground and squirmed under a rock. his yellow eyes glowed brightly as he peered his head up that was hidden by a shadow. He waited until she was so frustrated that her guard was down. It could be any moment just wait he thought. It will happen soon. Veles licked his tongue to his mouth as he imagined the feeling of eating his prey when suddenly a human came stomping through and saw the fae. He watched the exchange as both parties looked shocked at the other's appearance and perhaps existence. The Mortal who said his name was Christopher pond offered to take the fae to his home. She agreed. Veles head lowered in disappointment but not defeat. He slowly and patiently followed to wait for the right time to strike.

Growing close, Growing Sick Xyla had grown to enjoy her time with Christopher and seeing humans as more than just a legend. She came to understand that he was only 13 years of age. She was 102 she marveled at the mortals' limited lifespan and wondered how they accomplished all they could in such a short time. Likewise, Christopher could not believe that fae’s were real. He delighted in all of her stories and wished this experience would last forever. Xyla told him that they are now fae bonded which meant that their friendship would last forever. Christopher told her she didn't need to do that because he already felt that. In that very moment in that very second, the world melted away for each as their respect and understanding for each other came into clarity like the clearing of the dew on a foggy morning. Then Xyla collapsed and clenched her stomach, Christopher tried to comfort her but didn’t know-how. Xyla explained that she has been too long away from her colony and she experiencing the withering. The veil not only keeps mortals from fae it keeps the magic separated too. Her magic will fade in three days and then she will cease to exist. Christopher pulled a cloth napkin over her to keep her warm and pronounced that he was going to find the veil and her colony and get her home no matter what.

Veles attacks. Christopher and Xayla had traveled for two days. Xyla was growing so weak her once golden hair was now turning white and Christopher was filled with dread. They stopped by a river to refresh and eat. Xyla implored Christopher to leave her and go back to his life. She had seen the kindness of mortals and was now filled with a lifetime of memories. Christopher scolded her saying that they were friends now and he would never abandon a friend. Xyla at that moment saw the heart of the fae in Christopher's eyes. Behind them, unaware Veles deemed this his time to strike while the fae was weak. He hungrily hissed and advanced on Xyla. Christopher scooped her up and back away. Veles advanced unafraid of the mortal. Xyla saw that Christopher was in danger and flew from his hands and towards the snake. “Leave snake you have no business here,” Xyla said mustering her remaining strength. “You are my business fae. You are weak and dying, come let me end your suffering.” Veles spat as he rose to meet her gaze. Christopher used the distraction to grab a large rock with the intent of ending the conflict. Veles saw this and quickly darted past Xyla and straight for Christopher's legs. Xyla cried out and with the very last of her power flew ahead of the snake and took the bite meant for Christopher. The snake shrieked in delight as her body fell to the earth. Veles trained his sight on her near lifeless body ready to feast, That is when Christopher swung the rock as hard as he could against the snake's head. Veles looked to the boy then collapsed next to Xyla never to darken the forest again. Christopher wept as he fell on the ground looking at Xylas's lifeless form. He has failed his friend. He knew that there was nothing he could do for her now.

A Final and Nobel Deed Christopher begins to dig a small grave for his friend with whom he had grown so close in such a short time. A large light caught his eye and grew larger and ever so larger. Christopher knew this could not be the sun but then he saw it was a small group of fae’s led by an elderly-looking female. It was Mifnaunin , she explained that she had been looking for Xyla these past two days and sense her dying light. Christopher fell to his knees and begged if there was anything that could be done for her. Mifnaunin said yes but the cost would be great. Christopher rose and swore he would pay whatever it took, she was a beautiful person and deserved to live. Mifnaunin smiled knowingly and said “If she is to live you would have to sacrifice half of your life force to her. You are mortal, I know mortals are greedy…” Christopher cut her off with “ Fine I’ll do it, just please make it happen” Mifnaunin turned to the other fae in her congress and they looked upon Christopher. “If we do this your life will be cut in half and Xyla would become a mortal as well.” Christopher looked down at his friend and smiled then nodded his head. The faes began to glow and sing, their song turning to a rainbow of magic that encircled Christopher and passed through his chest right into Xylas body. Christopher ignored the pain as he saw life return to Xylas body and she began to grow to a mortals size. The song ended and Christopher fell next to a full-size Xyla with tears of joy in his eyes. He looks to Mifnaunin and thanked her. “Remeber mortal” Mifnaunin spoke “You are halflifed now. She is mortal, she may never return to the veil but at least she is alive” Christopher nodded as the fae left. He cradles Xyla as she awoke and he thanked her for saving his life. She smiled then noticed that she was no longer fae. Christopher smiled and said “Perpas not, but your still my best friend” The two laughed as the sunset over the valley. It would be years later that the two fell in love, married, and had children. Christopher never told her of his sacrifice only that Mifnaunin and the fae’s saved her. He loved her so much and even when he died at the age of 35 his love was unwavering. Xyla would recount her adventures to her children and tell them to remember that whether you are fae and seek to explore this world of mortal and seek to find the magic the only truth is love. It was love that saved me and love that made you.

about

This album was written for my granddaughter. My intent was to have a story she could grow up and learn from. Though she is five as of this writing I expect her to gloss over the idea now but, I hope as she grows she can appreciate the love her mother (Who sang the songs) has for her and her grandfather who wants her world to be filled with wonder but never mistake the world for what it is and can be. Thank you to Kimberley Miller for doing the voice of the Narrator.

A Fae's Life follows Xyla, a fae who leaves her colony to discover if human tales are real. Along the way she is hunted by an evil snake named Veles who desires to eat her so that he may speak to humans. She also meets Christopher, a thirteen-year-old boy who becomes her best friend as she learns the secrets of humans and life.
